Before the bell rings at 7:35 in the morning, students tend to stop by the cafeteria to grab a quick breakfast before heading to their class. But have you ever wondered about the privileges of having toaster ovens for students to use to cook items such as bagels? Hotels, colleges, etc. have it, so why not Braintree High School?
When students quickly grab items like a bagel from the cafeteria, I feel like there could be so much potential for those food items. For example, we could have the option of a toaster oven to toast bagels instead of leaving them warm. For this to realistically happen, a couple of toaster ovens could be placed outside of the cafeteria, instead of inside, to prevent a line from forming due to people waiting for their bagels to toast. After when students type in the school ID, just outside the doors, there will be toaster ovens available for students to toast their bagel to their liking.
Having these toaster ovens will also allow for students to customize better, such as adding toppings like butter or jam. It will also most likely increase the percentage of students who get breakfast in the morning, versus those who don’t, which is an important key supplement to start the day off. And depending on the toasters, it can be cost effective as well.
Obviously, there are some negatives to having toaster ovens that will challenge the concept of this idea. There might be some cleanliness issues, as the toasters may not be maintained properly, and can be a hassle for the lunch staff to clean them, along with the janitors cleaning the crumbs that may fall throughout the cafeteria. There might also be a risk of a fire hazard, as not all students could be trusted to handle the equipment, and could be putting themselves, or others, at risk.
That leads me to my last point, privilege. Depending on how many strikes a student has if they are caught messing with the toaster oven will determine the outcome of those privileges. This is to help deal with the safety concern issues, because as long as students are using these toaster ovens correctly, there will be no problem with having them available for students to use. During senior study in the morning, students will also have the privilege to use them throughout certain hours, before they are put away for the afternoon.
Overall, having toaster ovens is a great way for students to utilize the cafeteria in the morning. My main goal here is to diminish the reputation of the school food, and create a yummy and enjoyable experience for all students.
