The most anticipated season of Invincible raises the stakes dramatically, focusing on the upcoming viltrumite war comic fans have anticipated since the show’s release in 2021.
Invincible season four debuted on March 18th this year and as of now, is releasing episodes every Wednesday. So far, viewers’ opinions are pleasant. The show’s producers have decided to focus this season mostly on the main plot, rather than the smaller side plots as the scale of what the main characters are doing make anything happening on earth appear minuscule.
There have been four episodes so far at the time that I am writing this, and for the most part, the season has been some of the best work yet. This season (especially episode two) brings light into the viltrumites’ past. We see young Nolan and how he was brought up on Viltrum, which helps explain why he is the way he is. The visual aspect of Viltrum was also charming to look at, the artists on the show did an amazing job showing the beauty of a “utopian” society.
However, I and other viewers noted that the latest episode “Hurm” felt like a major filler. It featured the return of Darkblood (a character last seen in season one) but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough. The plot felt slow and boring with a lot of long sections of dialogue from characters we’ve never seen before. It felt like the episode was one slow push you had to get through just for the sake of watching it. Most viewers (including me) have very little interest in anything other than the Viltrumite war, making this episode just feel like even more of a drag.
Overall, despite a few slower moments, season four of Invincible is still on track to be one of the strongest seasons so far. The focus on the Viltrumite war gives the story this season a clear direction and makes everything feel more intense and important compared to earlier seasons that had more side plots. The animation this season is at its best, with more polished animations during interactions, which really stand out visually. However, pacing is still an issue at times. Despite the small hiccup of episode four, the main story remains strong. If the season keeps building toward the Viltrumite war and delivers on it, season four could easily end up being the best one yet.
