Many students dream of playing a sport for their high school, but fewer imagine of one day returning home to coach. For David Wall, a 2005 Braintree High School alumni, that dream has become a reality.
Wall, a three-sport captain during his time at BHS, was named the new head coach of the Varsity Boys Basketball team following the retirement of longtime coach Bob Crook in 2025. Having grown up in Braintree and playing for Bob Crook himself, Wall brings both experience and a deep personal connection to the program.
“I love basketball. I live here, I grew up here, I played here, so I have that connection,” Wall said. “I played for Coach Crook, so it’s important to me to make sure this program stays with someone who can run it the right way.”
Although stepping into a head coaching role comes with difficulties, Wall embraces the opportunity from a unique perspective. He understands both the expectations of the program and the importance of long-term success.
“It should be fun, and with that said, it’s a new challenge for me,” Wall said. “I was happy where I was, but I was ready for a change. The big picture goal is to make sure we’re in a spot where the program is sustainable. You want to win games, but you can’t sacrifice next year or the years after that.”
With a roster made up largely of younger and less experienced players, Coach Wall highlights development and patience. He knows mistakes are part of growth and believes giving underclassmen varsity experience now will pay off in the future.
“You have to let the young kids gain experience,” Wall said. “They’re going to make mistakes, and I have to live with that. But moving forward, we’ll have a group of players with varsity experience, which is huge. The long-term goal is to build something sustainable, successful, and something the town can be proud of.”
Players have already noticed Wall’s impact on and off the court. Captain Ethan Elie describes his coaching style as calm, organized, and instructional.
“He keeps the team organized and teaches everything while staying relaxed,” Ethan said. “He keeps the temper of the game calm and makes sure we’re learning the right way to play basketball. He brings a lot of energy and really believes in us.”
Other players including Chris Faoro highlight how Wall balances discipline with care for his players.
“When it comes to basketball, he’s very serious and pushes us to work hard every day,” Chris said. “But outside of basketball, he’s just a really nice guy who genuinely cares about everyone on the team.”
Players also credit Wall for the team’s improvement over the course of the season.
Chris continued, “When you compare where we were at the beginning of the season to now, we’ve grown so much. That’s all because of how he’s pushed us, driven us, and brought us together.”
