In late November, the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association announced the 2026 class that will be inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame this year. Among these names was Braintree High School gym teacher and highly regarded baseball coach, Mr. O’Connell.
In the 2024-2025 season, Coach O helped to lead the Braintree Wamps all the way to Polar Park in Worcester for the MIAA Division 1 Baseball State Championship. His dialed-in work ethic that he passes onto to his players is to thank for this.
“Braintree Baseball has always had a strong tradition of success well before I was here,” said Mr. O’Connell. “It’s a year-round sport and the guys have bought into that. The results have shown.”
Going into his 20th year of coaching, his experience plays a crucial role in his coaching style and what his players get out of their time on the Braintree Baseball team.
“He uses his experience and benefits of being a veteran coach to help players develop quicker and into better athletes and players,” says junior captain Luke Joyce.
Mr. O’Connell does more than just coach baseball, though. He teaches his athletes lessons that go beyond athletics.
“He makes us better people, not just better players,” says senior varsity baseball player Gavin Farragher.
“The long lasting relationships that you develop with the kids is really important to me,” Coach O said about his favorite aspects of coaching. “Not to be their friend, but to be their mentor, to be their coach. You just try to help them have a good experience.”
Congratulations to Mr. O’Connell and good luck to the baseball team this season!
