Maybe you grew up in a family that likes to get up early and run a Turkey Trot in the fresh morning daylight of Thanksgiving, or maybe your family is the type to sleep in and stay inside all day, watching the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Either way, people have come together with the Braintree High School Student Council to raise money towards aid for families that may not have the privilege to have food in front of them at the dinner table.
The Turkey Drive was hosted by all of the STUCO classes at Braintree High, and was available for students and faculty to donate during all lunch times throughout last week.
“We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, no matter how monetarily fortunate you are,” explained Student Council President Angelina Tzeng. “As the student body, we contact different clubs throughout the school to see if they want to donate, along with others within the community.”
Michaela Scheer, a member of National Honor Society, shares her experience on how donating to the Turkey Drive has such a positive impact on others.
“I am really glad that a foundation like NHS is participating on a donation like this, it just feels really good to give back to a community like Braintree, and I so happy that I can be a part of helping others in need.”
This year in total, the Turkey Drive has raised a total of $3800 in Shaws gift cards.
“The student body also set up a stand during Parent-Teacher Conference night to advocate for the Turkey Drive, and we raised over $50 for our families”
Tzeng and the BHS Student Council feel incredibly grateful to help out families around the holiday season.
“Along the same lines, the Braintree community should be well aware that our Adopt a Family will be starting soon,” explained Angelina. “Adopt a family is where our community donates to those in need for the holiday season, because everyone should enjoy end-of-year gifts.”
