In the past couple of weeks, Nordstrom announced that it would be closing 2 of its stores in Massachusetts, including the one at South Shore Plaza due to an expiring lease. The Nordstrom first opened in October of 2010 and will be closing its doors after almost 15 years.
“The first time I shopped there I thought it was a more upscale department store compared to other department stores and I noticed that it had inventory from a wider range of designers and brands than other places I had previously shopped at,” explained English teacher Mrs. Violette.
Even with an expansive catalogue of clothing, customers don’t seem to return there often.
“I would say I typically shopped at Nordstrom 2-3 times a year. It tended to be a place I would go if I was looking for something to wear to an event such as a wedding or baptism,” Mrs. Violette added.
“I’ve had the Nordstrom credit card for seven years and made two purchases in seven years,” said Braintree resident Elizabeth Smith.
A Dick’s Sporting Goods is said to replace the Nordstrom at the mall—planning to open its doors in 2026.
“More families will be attracted to going to Dicks Sporting Goods [as] Braintree has a lot of families with kids in sports. Also it would be cool having a rock climbing wall in the middle of the store,” Smith continued.
Though, some have had mixed thoughts about Dicks Sporting Goods replacing Nordstrom.
Junior athlete Connor Lin commented, “Dicks is not a place you’d go often, it’s just a place to buy gear. I don’t think a Dicks Sporting Goods needs to be as big as the Nordstrom at the mall so Nordstrom would probably be better.”
No matter what side of the coin you’re on, it is indisputable that the mall will experience new sets of customers and will change.
“I think that the Plaza is absolutely going to be different without Nordstrom. It’s another one of those large department stores to add to the ever-growing list that has vacated the Plaza,” Mrs. Violette expressed.
