In October, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Braintree High School. The Black Student Union hosts a “Think Pink” Event to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
The director of the Black Student Union, Renee Smith, discusses the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness.
“Breast cancer is important because women tend to forget to get their yearly mammogram. Um, so we want to remind women to get their yearly mammogram, and with October being breast cancer awareness month, what better way?”
With Think Pink being a successful event at the high school, Renee feels like to got to everybody around.
“Think pink is very important. We are getting the word out there, especially for girls from young, right? To start thinking about it, start planning ahead, to get their mammograms, and to spread the word as well”.
For Renee, Think Pink isn’t just a movement, it’s an idea that’s resonated with her throughout her life.
“So it’s a personal touch for me. This is probably my eighth year putting on a Think Pink event. I have two aunts that have died from this disease, and my mom has breast cancer. So I brought it over to the district with me, and I plan to continue think pink day for as long as we can”.
That this disease has hit home for BSU advisor Ms. Smith is unsurprising. According to the Mayo Clinic, though Black women are less likely to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, they are 41% more like to die from the disease. Black Student Union President Moriah Cambronero was also influenced by this.
“Yes, I would say I’m very impressed by the event. It gave more confidence and inspiration to this special event. It got to me a lot to be proud even especially at our school”
Moriah has such high hopes for this event that she believes that the Black community would be impressed by their doings.
“I would say the Black Community is proud and connected by our Think Pink because all of the publicity from it is spreading across the district and it would spread to any part of the black communtiy and everybody would be happy”.
Now that everybody in the Black Student Union knows how much the Think Pink Event is worth it, Moriah believes it will last for a long time”
“School wise, I believe becasue it’s so amazing, the METCO program and Black Student Union will keep it a tradition. Outside of school, I would say it will take time for getting a little more recongition but it will always be special”
