The high school fall season is often known for sports such as football or soccer. Unknown to many, fall is also when Braintree’s Swim and Dive team competes. However, preparation for the season comes year round.
“I swim on a team called the rapids, even though in the offseason, ” said Junior Captain Levinson Yang. “They help maintain your time and strength in the water.”
Despite many of Braintree’s team members swimming during the offseason for the Rapids or YMCA strypers, the program’s participation has shrunk within recent years.
“We used to be a very big team, up to thirty plus kids, to now only around ten kids,” expressed Junior captain Lucas Lee.
Swim both an individual and team sport. The team competes against other schools, while individually looking to qualify for states and sectionals.
“We work as a team to benefit the team by always bringing good moods and having fun. Individually I try my best to build strong relationships with teammates, making sure everyone is on task and putting their best effort,” the Junior Captain said.
Wins in the program are rare to come by. The team currently competes in a co-ed division.
Levinson helps explain the team’s record the last couple years.
“The first year, we had pretty decent records, but now we have like less people, it’s harder to win our meets.”
Despite the struggles to win the meets in recent years, individually, many athletes have been able to excel.
Lucas stated, “We’ve always been able to qualify for the post season in states, every year.”
The program is looking to rebuild for the future with a younger team. Whether it is getting that win in a meet, or doing well in states, we wish the best of luck to the Swim and Dive team for the rest of the season and in the future.
