The Pit, a large cavity surrounded by staircases in the center of the lobby, is back at Braintree High School, and it comes as a surprise to teachers and the confusion of students at Braintree High School. The Pit is remembered and recognized by many teachers who used to attend BHS. Students are wondering what to make of it.
“The Pit is kinda weird” Karson Ma criticizes, one the students at BHS, “Why is there just a random hole in the school? I remember people back then had clubs [where The Pit is], There is not going to be enough space for the other clubs.”
Other students do not like the idea of The Pit in the lobby either because of its design.
“I hate [The Pit] so much. It’s ugly and I liked the carpet [that was there] better” says Natalie Chen angrily.
Some students like the design, but wish the money was spent somewhere.
“I think it was a great addition to our school, maybe a waste of money, but at least it looks cool,” Ethan Lai explained.
Some students are neutral on the matter.
“I think it is kinda dangerous because people can fall into it, but I think that once kids start to get used to The Pit they can hang out,” remarks Heather Dasilva.
Overall students are hesitant of The Pit’s return, but many teachers are glad to see The Pit back in BHS.
“The day school ended last year, I was surprised to hear jackhammering out in the lobby, but now that the project is complete I like that The Pit is back. It is a throwback to when I was at BHS, and I do like the look of The Pit. I don’t know how the decision came to be, but I think it is a good feature in the lobby, “says Mr. Larkin, the Assistant Director of Special Services.
Many teachers reminisced of times when The Pit was in BHS
“High school Ms. Troy is really excited. It was a great place to hang out, and to dance for the high school prom. I hope that [the dance] comes back, and that comradery. I spent a lot of time in The Pit hanging out in school.” says Ms. Troy, one of the guidance counselors at BHS.
Mr. Wiggin best describes what The Pit was used for.
“The Pit was a place where students hung out after school. When you were just waiting for the parking lot to clear out and congregate…It’s like a college quadrangle…it is the center of campus where people can go, meet up, hang out, and wait for a late bus. It was a place for people to socialize. There also used to be a jazz band that used to play in The Pit. I’m happy The Pit is back. It encourages students to socialize face to face.”
