Over a weekend filled with bug spray and sleeping bags, the Interact Club at Braintree High School helped send out invitations for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp. Held from May 16 to May 18, 2025, this sleepaway camp brought together students from across Massachusetts, including places as far as Martha’s Vineyard and even some from Rhode Island. The camp took place at Camp Rotary in Boxford, Massachusetts.
From advisors to counselors to family leaders, many adults and even students have come back to the camp a second year to help first years enjoy RYLA as much as they did. Ashley, an incoming freshman at Boston University, had applied to come back and help out as a family leader. Having the role of a family leader means being responsible for the well-being and development of a group of campers.
“The best part about being a counselor is to be in charge of your family’s experience and knowing you are what makes them want to come as your role. The best part about being a family leader is making your kids have the best experience by being the best leader you can be,” explained RYLA counselor and family leader Ashley.
But it’s not just counselors who grow from the experience, campers do too. They come to RYLA, leave with new friends, and often learn something new about themselves. Julia Callahan, a sophomore Interact student from Braintree High, was invited to participate. At first she was hesitant, unsure of what to expect. But after the weekend, her perspective changed.
“The point of RYLA is to build strong leaders within our communities. The camp does this by leading highschoolers in bonding activities, pushing them out of their comfort zones, and creating a comfortable and loving environment,” expressed Julia.
RYLA is more than just a weekend away, it’s a transformative experience that empowers young high school students to grow as leaders, form meaningful connections, and step confidently into their future roles in their communities. Thanks to the dedication of returning leaders and the open-mindedness of new campers, the spirit of RYLA continues to inspire students year after year. For many like Julia and Ashley, it’s not just a camp, it’s a milestone.
Julia said, “I would definitely come back, especially as a counselor next year to ensure the next year of kids gets the amazing experience I did.”
