Saturday, March 4th marked the day that Braintree High School participated in the Massachusetts Educational Theatre Guild competition. The Braintree High School Theatre Guild has put on many shows for the school before. On March 4th, Braintree High competed alongside 80 to 100 other schools in order to move onto finals. The competition was broken up in different locations, with Braintree students being in Marshfield.
“We did a production of Shakespeare’s 12th night for the METG,” mentioned tech director and English teacher at BHS, Mr. Ferguson. “It is across Massachusetts with 80-100 schools preparing in Marshfield, it was us and 7 other schools.”
This competition was very tough because of the levels of the other schools. Braintree has always allowed Theatre Guild to be more of an extracurricular, not so much a big priority.
“Most of the other theatre programs we went up against had a lot more funding than us and were able to perform better and more elaborate shows because of it,” remarked sophomore Connor Costello. Connor played Andrew Augecheek in the play.
Although this competition was nerve racking and competitive, Braintree High came for the experience and honor. They did not qualify to move on but they still enjoyed participating.
“It is a wonderful experience. Because we went first, everyone got rid of their jitters and the goal was just to do as best as they could” commented Mr. Ferguson. “There are schools that go for the experience and some go to crush others, I will never be someone that goes to crush others.”
