Braintree High’s Environmental Club is preparing to host its annual astronomical viewing celebration, namely: Blackout Braintree.
“It’s just like an event in the softball fields and it’s where you can see the Geminid meteor shower that only happens once a year and like, we wanna get people an opportunity to see it.” Says Environmental club Co-President Giovanna Pizzi.
The event takes place on Friday, December 13 at the BHS Softball Fields. In the past this event has been a huge success, with many attendees and even hosting the Braintree astronomical society.
“We have free hot chocolate, and free baked goods. It’s just a fun time to hang out with your friends.” Says Co-President Norah Piccolo.
However Blackout Braintree is not just a hangout with friends, it’s an event coordinated to give people the opportunity to view the world that we can’t see with the naked eye.
“We have the South Shore astronomical society there so that they will have professional telescopes that will allow you to see more than just the Geminid meteor shower, like Jupiter Saturn things like that.” States Nora.
Blackout Braintree is more than just a club-run space viewing, its creation has its roots in bringing attention to a serious environmental issue in our society today.
“It helps to raise awareness about light pollution, and the harms it can have on different animals and different species in the environment. When you really want to see something (Astronomy wise), all it takes is just you need to shut off a light.”
