Braintree High School Boys Golf season came to an end last week. They retired with a record of 10-4. This was a huge step for the golf team in comparison to years prior. We talked to Mr. Crook, the head coach, and the captains, Jack McDonough and Aidan Finn.
“I thought we were gonna have a really good team because we had a lot of guys back. The way you do the state tournament in golf, you take six players and they count your best four scores. Five of the six guys that we took last year were returning, so we thought, we had eight guys overall, ultimately that would make the team that were returning so we’d thought we’d be in good shape.” Coach Crook stated.
There was a bright future to start this Golf season, but once it started, the players did not prevail the way that Coach Crook hoped.
“We started out 1-4 and we were very inconsistent. One day one kid would play really well, one day they wouldn’t and I was sort of searching for the guys who would play well consistently,” Coach Crook said.
With this inconsistency, the captains realized that they needed to do something about the team’s play. They knew there wasn’t much they could do but they could try to be more consistent.
“I think as a golf captain you can’t really do much but I feel like kinda just let the boys play and let everyone figure out their own game.” Said Captain Aidan Finn.
Jack Mcdonough added, “Um, I think the boys obviously, like what Aidan said, started off 1-4 and it was tough at the beginning but I think we all just realized what we needed to do, went out their and did it, battled back”
The boys then went on a 9 match win streak, which brought them to their fantastic record of 10-4. Heading into states they knew they had a real shot, but Coach Crook highlighted how they smashed their goals after this horrible start.
“Then we won out last nine matches in a row, to finish the season and if we set goals as a team, like the first goal would be to make the state tournament, so we accomplished that goal, the second goal would be to win the league championship, which in our side of the league, we did, and then the next one would be qualifying for sectionals and go on to the state championship and we did that as well. So I would say, we accomplished, usually you don’t accomplish that many of your goals so I was happy with that.” Coach Crook exclaimed.
During the state championship, the course was a hard one, so the boys knew they had to lock in and they ended up being very happy with the outcome.
