One club at Braintree High is turning global issues into local action. The Environmental Club spreads awareness of environmental problems and provides people with opportunities to give back to their local community. This club has one main goal: to grow. They are dedicated to increasing their impact on the Braintree community by trying to make the club more well-known to students and citizens of the town.
“There’s been a lot more people this year. I think mainly because we’ve been trying to advertise it more and we’re trying to make it more focused towards the events we do, like Blackout Braintree and Tree Fest.” Says Co-President Norah Piccolo.
This group of students has definitely planted a seed in the Braintree High community. Their two annual events, Blackout Braintree and Tree Fest, have become increasingly popular in recent years. Blackout Braintree has been the first yearly event of the Environmental Club in past years, kicking off the winter season with a viewing of a meteor shower just outside BHS. This community is hoping to bring in some new additions this year.
“We’re looking to do some different events. We want to do a thrift shop during Christmas time, so collect old, used toys and stuff and then end up selling them for a low price to help prevent waste. We’re also looking to bring more awareness to clean drinking water from the tap versus plastic bottles and how that hurts the environment.”
This club has grown with the help of hard work and planning. If more people join this community, more people will learn to appreciate the environment. Today, more than ever, we need to be focused on the health of the natural world.
“Global warming is really prevalent right now. I think just being informed about it and having a small part can really make a difference. If everybody does just a little bit, it’ll make a huge difference overall,” states Co-President Giovanna Pizzi.
