The 2024/2025 school year brought Braintree High School a new club for students to enjoy. Last Wednesday, National English Honor Society kicked off for the first time ever in BHS history. The club started as an idea by a couple of students to get students together, including junior President Vinaya Satheeskhumar.
“I had this idea last year to like bring together a lot of people that have a passion for humanity”
NEHS started to fill in the blanks for what the school did not have.
“I realized that there wasn’t much opportunity in Braintree High,” says Vinaya. “It was mostly a stem focused school, rather than a humanity focused school, and so I thought of an idea to bring people together to make a club”
The original plan of NEHS was different from what it actually turned out to be, as Vinaya states that “it wasn’t going to be a society at first, it was going to be a club, but it turned into a society.”
Making a club does not come with ease, as there are many different challenges, like finding an advisor, hence why NEHS took until this fall to start.
“Vinaya actually approached me last winter,” says junior Samantha Forster. “We actually had to go to a bunch of different English teachers before finally finding Mr. Jeffries.”
NEHS was an idea created solely by BHS students, and Mr. Jeffries loved it.
“Some enthusiastic students stopped by my classroom last year and pitched the idea with me,” says Mr. Jeffries, “and it was hard to say no to their enthusiasm, so now I’m on board and ready to go.”
NEHS has allowed students to become more connected to the school, not just their friends.
“I’ve definitely met a lot of new people,” says Samantha, “and it’s helped me connect with the actual administration of the school.”
