After a tight casting race, senior Lily Mauriello has been selected to play the lead role as the titular Unsinkable Molly Brown. While having her own distinguished music and theatre experience outside of school, this is Mauriello’s first starring performance in the BHS Theatre Guild.
“I did not believe it for the entire day,” she described, “It felt like I was dreaming like it wasn’t real.”
Of course, she must now perform the role in the upcoming fall musical. As Mauriello describes it, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown is about Molly Brown, who survived the Titanic. It starts with her upbringing, then switches to after the Titanic when she got on the escape boat.”
For Mauriello, this isn’t just another role, as Molly Brown is made to be a powerful presence on the stage.
“[Molly] starts very tomboyish… very much a leader,” she comments, “She’s a feminist, so you know, icon… she’s very strong and has good morals.”
Overall, the production is more than underway, and the experienced lead actress is more than ready to give the BHS theater everything she’s got.
“We just did our sitzprobe (first playthrough with an orchestra), which went great. I have all my songs memorized, so we’re really just putting things on stage.”
