The BHS ESports Team held their first interest meeting on Monday, September 9th. These members are trying to grow their team and develop people’s passion for Esports. The ESports Team here at Braintree High, holds organized video game competitions with other high schools. Having been officially founded just last year, this club displays how the digitized world is being incorporated into schools across the country.
“I think it provides a sense of inclusion. A lot of students play sports like football or track, but for those students who are not as athletic but still want to be part of a community it’s good to have a place where they can talk about their interests” Says Esports Club Advisor, Mr. Deng.
Teams are not just for football or basketball, at BHS, there is something for everyone.
“I joined because I play video games and my friends were in the club. Other people should join because it’s a formal way of playing competitive games and it’s pretty fun”, Explains Esports member, Mackenzie Wallace.
This team differs from others here at Braintree High, and not only because it’s the only team or club centered around playing video games.
“We play the games at home. And we mainly host meetings over call, so it’s very accessible if you have a computer, or some sort of gaming console,”says ESports member, Kaitlyn Truong.
Not only is this club an exciting, interactive way of playing video games, but this team can also provide opportunities for students. Most people know that students can earn scholarship money for excelling in sports or acing all of their classes, however, many people might not know that by winning games in ESports, students can also get financial help for college. According to university and college websites, a number of schools located in Massachusetts, including Northeastern University provide these scholarships.
“On Play Versus, the program that we use, some games offer scholarship money, it’s a chance for kids to get their names out, and a lot of colleges, nowadays are starting to recruit Esports players”
Moreover, the Esports team has high hopes for the upcoming season.
“I’m hoping to establish a computer lab for the Esports team and establish a more solid foundation for teams, as well. Making a Jv and Varsity team if possible because we are playing to compete, and playing to win, also to give these kids exposure to colleges” Explains Esports Advisor, Mr. Deng.
This team is looking forward to a new season of fresh players. ESports turned a passion into a team. By finding new members, this club was able to expand, and show people that no matter what they’re passionate about, there is a place for them at Braintree High School.
“We’re looking forward to competing and another year doing what we enjoy” Says Team Manager, Jaya Arsenault.
