The Lunar New Year is coming up, and Braintree is getting ready to celebrate. The Lunar New Year festival is the celebration of the New Year in the lunar calendar, a calendar based off of the moon’s cycles instead of the sun’s. The Lunar New Year is seeped in myths, with one myth surrounding the celebrations being about the monster Nian, who would attack at the start of a new year. It was scared of bright lights, loud noises, and the color red, so the villagers used them to scare it away.
The festival will feature performances, games, food, and plenty of things to buy, as well as a traditional Lion Dance ceremony for all visitors to enjoy. Admission will be free, and those who attend early will receive a special gift. For those who want to celebrate the Lunar New Year, or for those who are either interested or curious, the Festival will be held in Braintree High School’s gymnasium this upcoming Sunday, February 4th, from 12 o’clock to 4 o’clock PM.
